Alexis Kings; An indie rock duo who have produced an impressively sharp and musically sound two song EP reminiscent of the type of indie that had its heyday in the late 2000’s, but with less emotion, and more youthful joie de vivre. ‘Keep it Sexy’ is a bit cringe in places, starting with its title for instance, but all in all it leaves a promising taste for any fans of indie rock who are looking for something fun, light-hearted, and fast enough to stamp your feet and dance to.
‘Brothers’ kicks off and represents half the EP. There’s nothing new to hear and it doesn’t draw your attention to the band as one to keep your eye on, but the guitar riff matched with the drum rhythm is certainly catchy. The other half of the EP ‘1972’, deserves a bit more praise. Its opening reference to “cocaine tales”… “take a sniff and wish for the beautiful” is reflective of both the cringe aspect of the EP, but also of the image of youthful indulgence that the band seems to be going for. The song itself is a worthy 5 minutes of vocalist Brendan Aherne melodically calling for the better days of 1972, whilst backed up by a more ambitious and impressive guitar sequence than in “Brothers”. It will have lifelong indie rock fans stomping their feet and nodding their heads in nostalgic agreement.
‘Keep it Sexy’ is nothing to write home for, but equally, it’s not worthy of bypassing. Alexis Kings may not change the music world, but it’s probable that they’ll be around for a while and will entertain many young un’s along their way.
