Being As An Ocean – ‘Being As An Ocean’

By Jess Tagliani

Californian quintet Being As An Ocean simply exploded onto the music scene with their critically acclaimed album ‘Dear G-d’, which contained the popular singles of ‘Dear G-d’, ‘Humble Servant, Am I’, and ‘The Hardest Part Is Forgetting Those You Swore You Would Never Forget’. This album granted them the opportunity to tour in countries such as Canada, Australia, and the UK with bands like Counterparts, Hundredth, and Liferuiner.

Now, signed to InVogue Records, and with two albums to their name, including their last release ‘How We Both Wondrously Perish’, this melodic hardcore group are gearing up to release their self-titled album at the beginning of July. It’s the start of yet another chapter for this talented band, and will allow them to tour to even more countries, either as support acts or as headliners.

Single ‘Little Richie’ opens up proceedings and, from the start, Being As An Ocean mean business. The vocal play between Joel Quartuccio, Tyler Ross, and Michael McGough is simply awe-inspiring; the power that both of them hold in their vocals compliments their huge, monstrous riffs with no problem whatsoever. ‘The Zealot’s Blindfold’ and ‘Sleeping Sicarii’ are testaments to the band’s talent and power, whilst ‘The World As a Stage’ will create raging mosh pits at their shows, and will cause the very walls to sweat.

‘Saint Peter’ is an absolute standout track on this album; tight, solid drum work is mixed with riffs that simply soar and, again, the difference in vocals causes this track to really stand out and shine. It’s raw, but still catchy. It’s a track that ripples with power, but it still poignant and emotional. It’ll be a track that will have people flocking to the band during shows, listening to them as reverently as though they were preachers.

Being As An Ocean’s album takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey, full of sweeping lows and highs. For the band, it’s a therapeutic and cathartic outlet. Their music is forever a shifting soundscape, making them one of the leading, and best, bands within this field. What makes this a truly astounding piece of work is just how quickly they created and released this masterpiece after the release of their last album, which was put out only a year ago.
