Not too long ago, Croydon quartet Bellevue Days came onto the scene with a particularly stunning EP in the form of ‘The Sun Came Up When We Were Young’. Since then, they’ve taken on some pretty staggering opportunities; they’ve toured alongside Counterfeit and Tigercub, and will be at 2000 Trees later on this summer.
In between all the dizzying heights that they’re reaching, Bellevue Days have somehow found time to sit down and write and record another EP. ‘Sad Boy’ is another sweet and short release, just like their last, but honest emotion and talented musicianship has been poured carefully into each track – it’s definitely quality over quantity with this lot.
‘Ripped Jeans’ and ‘Pepper Tea’, both of which have received air pay from the likes of Zane Lowe, are fantastic tracks to kick-start the EP with. The chorus that rips through ‘Ripped Jeans’ is astounding and huge, but is tinged with incredible sadness; lyrics such as “Oh my god, I drink to forget / I love leaving cigarette stains on my twin-sized bed” are atmospheric, and help make this track even more compelling.
‘Something New’ may start off quiet and soft, but don’t let that fool you. It soon roars into life, with powerful, organic riffs. Then there’s ‘Gratefully Gracious’, which sees some gorgeous harmonising, and ‘Made From the Devil, Heavy Metal’, which is an anthem in itself.
‘Sad Boy’ truly cements Bellevue Days as one of the most exciting new bands. Their brutally honest, bittersweet take on youth makes this EP massive in every single way. Whatever you do this summer, do not sleep on this band any longer.
