Guess what? There’s another pop-punk band on the scene for you to check out. Now, while some of the cynics out there might scoff at yet another pop-punk band breaking through in 2015, let’s just all agree that it’s a fantastic genre, lots of fun, and perfect for the Summer. Thankfully for us, Manchester’s Best Years prove that they are indeed fantastic, lots of fun, and perfect for the Summer.
Proving that there is more to the City of Manchester than football, indie music and moaning Gallagher brothers, Best Years’ ‘Drop Out’ is a three track EP of catchy, well-written, entertaining pop-punk. Describing themselves as the band that “puts a smile on people’s faces”, you can’t help but think throughout the three tracks on this short but sweet EP that this is simply the sound of some best mates, making the music that they love, and having a damn good time doing so. That should be commended, should be celebrated, and certainly respected.
The music biz can be such a cruel, dark place at times, it’s easy to forget why so many people start bands in the first place – to have fun with their best friends, making the music that they love and having an amazing time doing so. Best Years do just that, and it’s a special thing.
From the The Story So Far-esque ‘Built To Last’, to lead single ‘Overrated’ and final track ‘Back Then’, ‘Drop Out’ is a celebration of everything that makes this genre so instantly appealing. The bouncing rhythms, sunshine-soaked guitars, and California style vocals might verge on cheesy, but it’s a cheesy we can deal with, and hell, just have fun with.
Don’t take music too seriously. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Stick this on, go for a drive and try and stop yourself from smiling. It’s what Best Years are best at.
