Climates – Body Clocks

By Lais

Lincoln five-piece Climates have well and truly been making their mark on the UK rock scene of late. Last month’s support slot with Beartooth got them some deserved recognition, and this month they’re doing their own headline tour. But aside from making their mark on the live circuit, they also released their debut album ‘Body Clocks’ earlier this month, and it shows just how much potential they have.

Opener ‘Leaves Of Legacy’ has a big sound, and it’s a great introduction to Climates if you’re not familiar with them already. They have often been referred to as ‘metalcore’, but judging from this album, the genre doesn’t seem to fit them at all. They’re much too melodic and there’s not nearly enough cliched screaming and chugging riffs. Not to say metalcore is a bad thing at all, just that they don’t necessarily fit the stereotype.

But back to the music itself, rather than stereotypes: there’s a lot going on here. Climates have got their melodies down, and they’ve combined them with throaty screams and some hugely catchy choruses. The intro to fourth track ‘In The Heart Of Man’ sounds almost ‘Sempiternal’-esque, and more specifically, a bit like the Bring Me The Horizon album opener ‘Can You Feel My Heart’. But once the intro is over, that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

The great thing about this album is the variety in the tracks – they veer between satisfyingly heavy and gloriously melodic, and at no point does it get boring, which is the danger with some heavier bands. Climates should be incredibly proud of their debut album, because it really is very good. This band have some serious potential.
