London punk rockers Counterfeit explode into existence with the release of their debut record ‘Together We Are Stronger’. We might only be mid-way through March but there’s already been a sleuth of debut releases of exemplary quality and this album is no different.
Opening track ‘Washed Out’ kicks the album into fifth gear from the off with a blistering pace that lasts throughout. Its mesmerising riff is matched equally with front man Jamie Campbell Bower’s vocals while the explosive breakdown is a signal of intent. Bower with the help of fellow guitarists Tristan Marmont and Sam Bower prove they certainly know how to write a guitar riff, as track after track their furious sound bombards you. It’s never overpowering though, and backed up by Roland Johnson on bass and Jimmy Craig on drums, they never falter.
With almost the whole band lending to the album vocally they are blessed with an abundance of talent that can easily mix it up from harmonies to screaming and everything in between. ‘As Yet Untitled’ stands out only slightly more than the rest, encompassing the band’s skills in their entirety with a riff that will make you wish you had long hair (if you don’t already) to spin while you head bang along.
The almost Marilyn Manson-esque ‘Enough’ towards the end of the album packs a knockout punch with its infectious drum beat before the final track ‘Letters To The Lost’ is a raw, emotional ballad seething with both beauty and hatred in equal measures. With their debut album, Counterfeit prove in one fell swoop that they’re no fakes; unleashing a relentless but scarily measured assault on the senses which will have you begging for more.
