Downhill – Untitled

By paul

This is so hot off the press it’s not been named and there’s no cover art either! This is the third time I’ve reviewed Irish pop-punkers Downhill and, to their credit, they’ve got better every time. This EP is their best work yet and they’ve taken criticism on board and clearly worked hard to find their own sound and identity. Previous releases suggested a band that copied their peers and struggled to find originality. Not any more. They’re more confident and even have a slight swagger in their sound. They sound better than ever for it.

There’s a Four Year Strong-esque vibe to ‘We’re Falling’ which is clear, crisp and hard-hitting. The drums sound really good, the vocals even better. It’s one of those songs you can easily see on Scuzz or Lava if the band can get a natty video together. ‘What She Said’ has a big vocal hook too. This EP is three good songs, played well and recorded nicely. It’s the sound of a band growing in their own skin. It’s not perfect and there’s still room for growth, but kudos to a band getting better all the time.
