Fangclub – ‘Coma Happy’

By Kathryn Black

It’s going to be a good end to the year for Fangclub. Off on tour with Twin Atlantic and Pulled Apart By Horses, they’ve found themselves in the big leagues with little career to speak of behind them and new EP ‘Coma Happy’ – their second so far but almost definitely not their last – is simple and effective: destined for mainstream success.

Although a sound rooted firmly in indie, ‘Dreamcatcher’ sounds grungy, giving off an air of nonchalance only a band who know they’re cool would have. Its simplicity is its charm as vocalist Steven King’s powdery notes blend in with the backing track and it all sounds effortless. Think nineties, think garage bands, think old school – it just works. ‘Follow’ differs, opening with a basic guitar introduction, and sticking to a reliable indie-single formula. Again, nothing fancy here but whether intentionally or not, Fangclub’s sound is super easy to listen to.

The slightly more adventurous ‘Inside Joke’ sees raspy vocals, chunky, repetitive chords and a brain-invading hook make for a dreamy alternative sound that broods and growls. The only criticism of the sound is evidenced in ‘Coma Happy’ as that chilled out sound verges on unnoticeable. There’s no wow moment, nothing that kicks you in the stomach or tugs on your heart, so you’re left wanting more. Not in a “let’s listen to that again” way, but as though something’s lacking.

Fangclub’s music isn’t particularly dynamic but their unfussy sound will open them up to a wide audience, as proven by the mainstream support they’ve gained so far. Will they match the success of their tour mates? As it stands, no – but if they stick a killer solo in there or an emotive ending, they could easily go from basic to brilliant.
