Portsmouth pop punkers High Down are determined to make their mark on the pop punk music scene with their EP ‘Moving On’. Influenced by bands like State Champs, Neck Deep and New Found Glory, they have delivered an EP that is catchy and a real pleasure to listen to.
After a feud with Jarrod Alonge (famous YouTuber, FYI) earlier this year over a previously released track, they have made a positive comeback with brand new material which is sure to please fans both old and new.
‘Life Lessons’ begins with a high EQ fade in guitar part which leads us into the track with a synthesised boom. Based on true life events, lyrics like “you’re the reason I don’t sleep” and “you never give, give, give, you only take, take, take away” make the track easy to relate to as a listener. Vocalist Luke Smithson creates melody lines that are catchy and memorable, whilst the rest of the band compliment the vocals with energetic guitar parts and dynamic drumming.
Fourth track ‘Making History’ is heavy with drum fills. The bridge and breakdown are great contrasts to the rest of the track, slowing things right down to expose synthesised string parts, adding to their texture and density. With a repetitive guitar part, this creates a totally different feel in comparison to the rest of the track.
‘Rescue Me’ with acoustic guitars and harmonies in the vocals backed by strings, creates a highly emotion-filled track. The melody line is unforgettable and there is a sweet surprise when an unknown guest vocalist joins Smithson and doubles up the vocals, complimenting the track.
Overall, the EP is well written and has plenty of surprises. Fans old and new will enjoy this pleasant array of tracks, and will easily relate to the lyrics and stories told.
