I’ve said it before, and no doubt I’ll say it again, but for me In At The Deep End Records have to be the most consistent label in the UK right now. Time after time we’ve received great releases from the label and this latest offering is no different. Love That Kills hail from various points in the Southeast of the country and ‘To Cruel Nails Surrendered’ is the band’s debut release for IATDE.
Clocking in at just 19 minutes in length, this EP rattles past in no time at all. Love that Kills play a brand of metallic hardcore that brings together a whole host of influences – if you think of bands like Poison The Well and Shai Hulud, and give them a British edge, you’re on the right track. There is an awful lot to take in during the short lifespan of this CD. Screaming, raw vocals, intricate guitar work, a surprising amount of melody and a great rhythm section all combine to good effect. Opening track ‘Bloodless’ introduces you instantly to the band’s sound – heavy, aggressive, melodic and with a hint of brooding menace. ‘Razor Blade Smile’ increases the pace and the vocals appear even more laced with malice, and ‘Hangman’s Game’ is quite simply stunning.
The biggest compliment you can pay Love That Kills is that after ‘To Cruel Nails Surrendered’ ends you’re left demanding much more of the same. This is a band that will appeal to a broad spectrum of fans and, with a debut release this good, deserve to be checked out by as many people as possible.
