It’s always a shame when a young band calls it a day when they’re only a couple of years into their career. Due to financial issues and time commitment, Oh Captive is one of the latest bands to unfortunately break up. But, whilst their career has been rather short lived, the alt-rockers, hailing from the South West of England, have had a blinding few years together. They’ve gained support slots alongside acts such as Marmozets, Arcane Roots, Bltitz Kids, and As It Is, and have graced stages at festivals, including Leopalooza and New Age.
But before they wave goodbye, they’re releasing their brand new EP ‘Two Mirrors’; a small release, clocking in at 15 minutes, it’s Oh Captive’s farewell to their faithful fans. A small release it may be, but they’ve packed it with plenty of adrenaline-fuelled energy to make sure they go out with a bang.
Opener ‘Recover’ sets the scene nicely; they’ve packed this song with melodic hooks and bouncy choruses, making it a solid opening track. Their infectious energy spills over into ‘Motion: No Motion’ – potent riffs and a sturdy, tight bass line builds up a concrete-like foundation, for which these mighty rock anthems can stand upon.
‘Live Fast Don’t Last’ slows things down a bit, whilst still providing an almighty punch with their solid melodies; elephantine vocals soar and complement the strong riffs. Title track ‘Two Mirrors’ ends this EP on a high – plenty of vigorous energy makes this track an absolute belter.
It is a shame that Oh Captive are calling it a day; with a little bit of tweaking and polishing, they could well have been on the way to becoming one of Britain’s next breakthrough acts. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end, and they’ve ended it pretty well.
