Rhythmic Coughing – Demo

By bushy

I’d like to start this review with a little bit of honesty. Until very recently I hadn’t heard of Rhythmic Coughing. All that changed when I saw them on the same bill as Echofreddy in London. I have to say I was very impressed with them in a live setting – they were tight and above all they were having fun. This three-track demo, then, is the first time I’ve had a chance to hear the band on record.

Rhythmic Coughing are a four-piece punk/pop/rock hybrid that hail from Manchester. They have been together for a few years now and that shows in the quality of their song writing. All the songs on this demo are structured well and have the ability to connect with the listener instantaneously – something that isn’t easy to achieve. Opening track ‘Punishmente’ showcases this fact very well. It’s a driving song that is made all the better for the quality of the lead vocals. The vocal quality is emphasised once again on ‘Where Did She Go?’, a track that also shows off good use of backing melodies and some great guitar work. ‘Lead Role’ finishes things off in style by bringing together everything that was so good in the first two songs.

Rhythmic Coughing aren’t the finished article yet but they have shown on this demo that they have talent in abundance. They play a very accessible style of music and have some great vocals – they definitely deserve a bit of attention lavished upon them. Make sure you go and see them next time they play your town – you won’t be disappointed.
