Sibling – ‘Dream You Away’

By Jess Tagliani

After the release of their, quite frankly, stunning EP ‘Miserable Love’, Sibling soon became one of the most talked about and sought after bands within the post-rock scene. Shows alongside the likes of Nervus ensued and now they’re back for round two with their upcoming release ‘Dream You Away’.

But don’t be fooled by the dreamy guitar tones and frontman Benio Baumgart’s ethereal vocals; dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that the lyrical matter behind this release is dark and haunting. Behind each track lies words based on the moments within a breaking-down relationship and how best to walk away from that toxic environment.

Diving in with ‘Love/Sick’, the trio combine catchy hooks with delectable harmonies; reverbed guitars create a truly emotive atmosphere, something that Sibling are masters at. Title track ‘Dream You Away’ kicks off with punchy drum work before infectious guitar tones and synths are layered on top.

‘Tu Me Manques’ demonstrates both Benio’s strong, yet tender, vocals and his songwriting capacity, as he gives life to anguishing lyrics such as “This was meant to feel like sunshine / but you were rain / I was meant to miss you every day.” Along with distorted riffs and steady drum work, it’s a song that could and should become an anthem, and it’s an anthem that could easily sit within the walls of an arena – perhaps even a stadium. The vibrant and dynamic ‘Breathe In’ follows in the same steps as ‘Tu Me Manques’ – Benio’s distraught vocals sing “’Cause it’s not fair that you’re okay / and I’m still here / barely breathing” and electric closing chords end this bittersweet release.

Sibling have created yet another masterpiece in the form of ‘Dream You Away’. It’s an EP that is laced with devastating emotion yet, along with beautiful guitar work and Benio’s truly delightful vocals, it’s a release that’ll see them become even brighter than they already are.
