By changing their name, Superheaven, formerly Daylight, might have lost some of their following, but their sound unquestionably remains the same. ‘Ours Is Chrome’ feels like a statement by the band that they continue to thrive and mould their own space in the current grunge and emo scene.
This record sees the band reinstate their purpose, with eleven driving, mid-tempo, 90’s era grunge tracks. Superheaven’s previous release ‘Jar’, under their previous name, gained widespread recognition as a centrepiece of the grunge and emo revival. ‘Ours Is Chrome’ elevates the band beyond this. Superheaven aren’t just a revival band, they epitomise the 90’s grunge sound. They could be Nirvana reincarnated to play alongside Basement. They bring the popular grunge sound and transport it flawlessly into 2015.
Some critics of the band argue that their sound is predictable, with little variety. This is not an inaccurate description, as ‘Ours Is Chrome’ is nothing new for the band. It is exactly what you might expect from Superheaven’s second album. However, this is not to say that there aren’t standout tracks on the record. ‘Blur’ lowers the tempo, stripping the band down to showcase the slow, depressing, vocal melody. ‘Gushin’ Blood’ takes Superheaven in a more poppy direction, with a catchy chorus and danceable rhythm, and ‘From the Chest Down’ opens with a heavy, dark, bass riff and feels almost aggressive.
‘Ours Is Chrome’ has a distinct change in lyrical content from ‘Jar’, exploring the band’s thoughts and feelings about being away from home and family. The lyrics are personal and heartfelt, something which comes across in the vocal delivery. The entire record is slightly mellower than ‘Jar’, and the band hasn’t taken any new dramatic steps, but ‘Ours Is Chrome’ has heavy riffs, strong lyrics, and standout songs. Whilst it is doubtful that this record will be one of the best of 2015, it definitely won’t disappoint Superheaven fans.
