The Mission In Motion – Somewhere Safe

By paul

From the name I had visions this band would be a bit Circa Survive-y, but they’re actually more Relient K. This is pretty much straight up pop-rock and it’s fairly enjoyable too. For the uninitiated, the band hail from Sydney, Australia and this is their debut album. They’re beginning to make waves over the other side of the world with tours with the likes of Senses Fail and Valencia.

The album name stands up well as these guys don’t exactly push too hard at the genre boundaries. That isn’t meant to sound negative, it’s just these boys play it safe. They write catchy songs but don’t take too many risks in doing so. Tracks like ‘The Whole Truth’ and ‘The Storm’ wouldn’t sound out of place on daytime, mainstream radio stations (if you like that sort of thing). There’s a darker tinge to some of the lyrics, although the slick production kind of irons out any edgier moments. Single ‘New Skin’ is, surprisingly, one of the least interesting songs here with cliche-ridden lyrics and bland riffs. Overall though, this is worth a listen if you like your music to be poppy, melodic and, well, pretty safe.
