The One Hundred – Subculture EP

By Lais

Next week sees the release of The One Hundred’s new EP ‘Subculture’, and there’s no doubt they’re going to make waves with it. But first, a bit of background: if you’ve never heard of The One Hundred before, they’re a four-piece from London who mishmash several genres – including rock, hip hop and electronica – and they’re bloody exciting.

Joining the likes of Hacktivist (who they’re actually touring with later in the year) in managing to combine genres and still sound great, the ‘Subculture’ EP is a fantastic taster of what is to come from The One Hundred camp. Opening with ‘No FKX’, a fairly mellow, chilled out track, is almost the definition of ‘calm before the storm’, because then all hell breaks loose.

Next up are singles ‘Breed’ and ‘Kingsmen’, which have already caused a stir online. The former has a massive sound, and isn’t a million miles away from early Enter Shikari material (which is a very good thing), and the latter goes for a more stripped back hip hop vibe before breaking into some metalcore screams and chugging riffs. The combination of rap, riffs and electronic elements may sound like it wouldn’t work, but it’s a winning one in this case.

They drop some euphoric dance vibes on ‘Unleashed’ before the massive ‘Tale Of Two Cities’ hits hard. Last song ‘Downfall’ is probably the catchiest track on the EP, with a hugely infectious chorus and gang vocals to boot.

‘Subculture’ is a fantastic taster of how much potential The One Hundred have, and how exciting they are. Each song is completely different, meaning that ‘Subculture’ never gets boring. If you haven’t checked them out yet, make sure you do, because there’s no doubt their name will be on everyone’s lips soon.
