Do you remember when Deaf Havana were a post-hardcore band, before the release of ‘Fools and Worthless Liars’ which, although catchy and enjoyable, lacked the edge and personality of their first full-length? If, like me, you wished they’d settled somewhere in between, then you’ll want to check out Kent-based four piece The Young Hearts. ‘Everything We Left Behind’ is crammed full of emotive songs that offer the power and pace of heavy alternative-rock with an addictive dose of honesty and passion.
This isn’t a record that grabs you from the start; it may take a few listens before the quality starts to take hold. ‘Everything We Left Behind’ isn’t a fire that blazes with instant effect and soon goes out, it’s more of a comforting blanket that’s built to last. The combination of heavy instrumentals, dynamic drum patterns, interesting guitar work and warm vocal tones ensures that this soothing atmosphere persists throughout.
Often, bands in this genre rely on anthemic, catchy choruses to hook you in, but The Young Hearts tread a different path. While the choruses and melodies on the EP are far from ineffective, they aren’t the sole attraction. Each song flows naturally through intelligent song structures and meaningful melodies, all drenched in raw emotion and honesty thanks to Craig Lawrence’s excellent vocals. There’s a compelling level of passion conveyed in every sentence and it’s this deeper connection that makes you play this record over and over again.
The production is reserved and minimalistic, allowing the true character of the band to shine through, further emphasising the emotion in the music. It’s a perfect match for the aesthetic of the EP and differentiates the band’s sound from other, more polished acts. In terms of tempo and structure each song stays fairly consistent and while this doesn’t detract from this release, it’s something for the band to strengthen on future releases to prevent their sound from going stale, particularly if a full-length album is on the cards. For now though, The Young Hearts have announced themselves well; ‘Everything We Left Behind’ is an excellent debut, packed with intelligent songwriting, passionate vocals and memorable songs.
