Thursday – No Devolución

By Andy

THURSDAY‘s latest release NO DEVOLUCIÓN has created a lot of interest and hype, which for a band that have been going for almost 15 years is impressive and there is something for Thursday fans of old and new to enjoy. The start of opening track ‘Fast To The End’, for example, is classic Thursday but as the song develops it shows off the albums overall sound of being more atmospheric, with this being accentuated by the reverb set high on Rickly’s vocals.

Overall, it’s a further departure from the post hardcore sound that they mastered earlier in their career through the breakthrough ‘Full Collapse’, with the closing track ‘Stay True’ being the exception. The driving rock sound that has been familiar on recent Thursday releases is also evident here but it’s the tracks layered with keys that really impress. ‘Empty Glass’ in particular is hugely complimented by them and helps make the poetic words from Geoff Rickly really stand out.

While the results are impressive, the further change in direction does take a few listens to get used to but the reward is worth it as this develops into one of the best albums of the year so far.
