Track and Field – ‘You Are My Home’

By Jess Tagliani

When looking at the line-up of Track and Field, with members coming from bands that include grindcore outfit The Afternoon Gentlemen and punk rockers The Plight, you’d be forgiven for assuming that immediate comparisons wouldn’t point in the direction of the likes Brand New, and the newer, but ever brilliant, Moose Blood. However, this Leeds lot are bigging it up on the contemporary indie rock scene and their latest release, ‘You Are My Home’, is due to push them even further into the limelight.

It’s an incredibly short release, with only four tracks, but Track and Field have made sure that each track is executed cleanly in order to sound huge. ‘Ghost Sleep’ sets the scene with melodic hooks and powerful vocals, before moving on to the elegantly beautiful ‘Up Side’ – the riffs are intricate and rhythms are sweet and smooth. Then there’s ‘Swift’, which sees a shot of adrenaline being injected to create a slightly more energetic track, complete with bouncy drum work and strong, clean vocals from frontman Mick Grogan. ‘World’ then closes on a quieter note; personal and expressive lyrics help to deliver a fitting close to this release.

Track and Field’s blend of emo and classic indie creates a poignant, moving EP in ‘You Are My Home’. In a time when the emo and indie rock scene are expanding, it’s exciting that Track and Field have tapped into this genre so well with their huge anthems. They can only go up from here.
