‘Well Soon’ is the latest full length from California’s Walter Mitty And His Makeshift Orchestra, released this July on Make New Enemies. Whilst this is the band’s most polished album to date it’s still stacked full of character, unexpected melodies, and a plethora of instruments along the way.
‘Post Graduation Oblivion’ is the ideal introduction to Walter Mitty – it’s has a light and summery vibe and instantly likeable vocals. It’s essentially soft indie-rock with hints of folk and blues thrown into the delivery and it works really well. You’ve then got ‘Holy Cannoli’ buzzing away with a kazoo led chorus, ‘Caterpillars’ with this awesome vocal melody, and ‘Good Grace’ with its heavy use of percussion. Each track is underpinned by a chilled and relaxing tone but they still have a great pace and an inherent melody throughout.
Imagine Jack Johnson but without the over exposure and the constant reminders that he’s from Hawaii and you’d be close to the sound here. That’s a compliment too. For his all critics he’s a capable songwriter and Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra are exactly that. This isn’t an album that’s full of excitement and huge changes of pace; it’s more subtle and mellow but just as effective.
With most tracks barely hitting the two minute mark you quickly fly through this album. It’s an enjoyable listen and provides a great soundtrack to hot summer days.
