To be fair to Wilson Fisk, you could never accuse them of trying to be anything other than a very British band. The vocals are very, very homegrown. There’s no faux-So Cal vocals, no Mockney accents…this is very British stuff. Thumbs up. These guys featured on our recent Un-Scene 5 compilation and have a choppy, indie style with plenty of poppy melodies. They reference the likes of Polar Bear Club, Small Brown Bike, Say Anything, Idlewild and Brand New as influences but I wouldn’t say they sound like any of the above at all. I’d say it was more like Tellison mixed with Biffy Clyro, but even then that’s miles wide of the mark.
So Wilson Fisk are hard to pin down – and that makes their tunes all the more enjoyable. They are catchy and melodic but not that predictable, which makes them exciting and interesting. ‘Texas Is Blue’ and ‘Our Man In Japan’ have this interesting, quirky edge to them which I like. And while the band aren’t the finished article and their songs could do with a bit of trimming and polish, there’s enough here to suggest the band have a bright future.
