We had a quick chat with Cleveland, Ohio pop punk four-piece Light Years and found out about their new album ‘I’ll See You When I See You’, how 2015 has been for them, and how they’re feeling about coming over to the UK to tour with Neck Deep and State Champs in February.
Hey guys, how’s it going with you? How are things in the Light Years camp just before Christmas? Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you as well! Everything is pretty good right now, can’t complain.
You’ve recently released your second album, ‘I’ll See You When I See You’. It’s great! How would you describe it to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
I like to think it is a nice mixture of older bands’ sound that set the stage for this whole scene we are a part of now, with a dash of this modernish pop punk sound. But what do I know?
How do you think it compares to your debut album, ‘I Won’t Hold It Against You’, and your previous EPs?
I feel this is our best work yet. We really came together as a band to make these songs the best they could be.
How has the reaction been to the album so far? Are you pleased with it?
So far I think people seem to like it. We have been playing the new songs live and they have been getting pretty good reactions.
How was the recording process?
We worked with Will Yip again for this record. It’s our third time recording with him so we are pretty comfortable in his studio and we know how each other work best. He really gets us to play at our best and doesn’t rely on computers and shit to make it sound good, which is awesome. Everything went pretty smooth and we didn’t cut any corners on the songs which I think shows when you listen to it.
You’re coming over to the UK in February to tour with Neck Deep and State Champs. How are you feeling about it? How do you find UK audiences?
We can’t wait to play those shows. We have been pretty good friends with Neck Deep for awhile and it’s always cool to play shows with your friends. Everyone we have met in the UK has been super cool and nice so hopefully it’s more of the same!
What are the rest of your plans for 2016?
Planning on touring and just trying to get our new record in as many people’s hands as we can.
How has 2015 been for you overall?
It had its ups and downs, but I think I can say it was pretty decent. Went to some new places and made some new friends.
Where do you see yourselves ideally by the end of 2016? And how about in five years?
Dammmn. Well I’m really bad at planning ahead, but I’d like to think we were able to gain some more people that back Light Years by the end of the year, and in five years I just hope I’m still able to play music. Wether it be in Light Years or just by myself.
Is there anything in particular you haven’t done as a band yet that you’d like to? Any places you’d like to tour or bands you’d like to tour with?
One of our final bucket list goals is to go and play shows in Australia. Hopefully that can happen!
