Glass Giants – formed of vocalist Ross Dixon, guitarists Alyn Evans and Alex Williams, bassist Liam Toomey and drummer Martyn Howell – hail from South Wales, the home of many incredibly talented bands. We talked to bassist Liam about their new single, working with producer Romesh Dodangoda and what the future holds for them.
Glass Giants really are babies in the music world: they formed less than a year ago, but four of the members were previously in a band together. When that split up, guitarist Alex joined and they haven’t looked back since.
When asked about their sound, Liam says, “We try and put as much fun and feelgood vibes in our songs as we can. We’d say we were somewhere in the middle of the pop and rock worlds, taking influence from bands like One Direction, The 1975, You Me At Six and Don Broco. Something we pride ourselves on is not having any two of our songs sounding the same. Every time we write, we try and write something fresh and we look to keep evolving as a band.”
One of Britain’s most well-respected producers is Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral For A Friend, Kids In Glass Houses, The Blackout etc) and it was surely a huge deal for a new band to work with someone so admired in the music industry. “We loved working with Romesh! His knowledge of music and what makes a great song is second to none and we’re definitely looking to work together again,” says Liam. “He’s worked with so many great bands and to have our name in that list is a real privilege.”
South Wales has been famous for being home to a number of successful rock bands over the last couple of decades. Have Glass Giants been influenced by the amount of bands that have made it from their area? “100%! We think any up and coming band from South Wales would be influenced by the list of great bands that have come out of the area in the past. They were all just normal people like us, who grew up in the same environment, and it shows that if you work hard, then you can achieve your dreams.”
Glass Giants have recently released a super catchy new song, ‘D.A.N.C.E’, which is the first single off their new EP which will be released in August. “We recorded the full EP with Romesh. Everyone involved is so proud of it and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it,” says Liam.
The band hope to tour the UK in support of their EP before the end of the year. “I think we’re all agreed in saying that there’s nothing better than playing live,” says Liam. “We try and have as much fun as possible when we play and there’s nothing better than the reception you get off a great crowd.”
And how about their biggest goals as a band? Where do they see themselves in five years? “One thing we all want to do is playing Reading and Leeds. We know bands that have played it before and would love to follow in their footsteps. It’s quite hard to say where we’ll be in five years because anything can happen in music, but we’d like to think we’d be playing some bigger shows and we’d be in the position to help young, up and coming bands. To be the next big export from music in South Wales would be incredible.”
