The London Short Film Festival will be screening director Omar Majeed’s 2009 documentary ‘Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam’ on the 16th January.

The film takes an in depth look at bands within the hardcore punk scene who’re from Muslim backgrounds. This will be followed by a discussion hosted by filmmaker Hammad Khan, along with a panel featuring Ms. Mohammed (formerly Dana Jade), Nabihah Iqbal (formerly Throwing Shade), Nerm (Shiva Soundsystem , BBC DJ/broadcaster), Nadia Javed (The Tuts), and Kaleem Aftab (writer/film producer). They will discuss what happened to Taqwacore and how class, race and gender tie in with Muslim resistance to both Trump and Brexit. More info about the event can be found here.

The event will be closed by a performance from Javed’s band The Tuts. In 2016 the London indie punks released their debut album ‘Update Your Brain’ on Dovetown Recordings.
