“Two legs bad, four legs good, eight legs better! Godspeed Paul the Octopus. Psychic sensation, and the ultimate saving grace of what was a pretty difficult World Cup!
After news of his sad demise reached us on the dark day of last Tuesday, Octopop! Records (a subsidiary of Alcopop! set up for one release, and one release only) put out an urgent appeal on Twitter for a moving tribute song to the nation’s favourite 8-legged hero (born in Weymouth of course), who correctly predicted football results all the way through the World Cup…
Jon Spanyol answered that call.
Former resident of the sleepy town of Malvern, Worcestershire, before moving to the capital, multi-instrumentalist Jon, when not penning epic Octopus ditties, works by day on Sony’s Singstar Karaoke and recently won the Broadjam ‘Get Lubed’ competition – presumably for songwriting.. We didn’t dare ask… He was also one of 10 artists to appear on the Mercedes Benz Mixtape “Orange Distortion”.
The video features several moving minutes of classic Paul footage, as well as several wonderful Twitter reactions to Paul’s tragic end and a classic quote from Iranian Leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad… The track is now available on iTunes, or to watch on YouTube. Rumours of being stocked in the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany are yet to be confirmed :-).
