Taiwan welcomes the world’s first heavy metal politician

By Ben Tipple

Taiwan is the first country to welcome a heavy metal star musician into their political ranks, as Chthonic front man Freddy Lim celebrates his election into parliament. Back by his New Power Party, Lim went on to beat Lin Yu-fang of the Chinese Nationalist Party, who had held the position for two decades.

Lim’s successful campaign saw the underdog cement votes using the tools available to him, including a concert to twenty-thousand strong audience in Liberty Square on Boxing Day.

With his long hair and tattoos, it’s a further push in a more liberal direction for Taiwan. His 4% margin makes him one of five elected into parliament for the New Power Party.

“I will never forget that the victory belongs to all of us,” said Freddy in an interview after his victory. “The road ahead may be difficult, but our goal is very clear! We are full of hope! I am Legislator Freddy Lim who represents Zhongzheng and Wanhua Districts, and I will take the will of the 300,000 residents in the constituency with me and put out maximum efforts to make a change for Taiwan.”

Chthonic have enjoyed European success, appearing at Wacken Open Air, Download Festival and Bloodstock, and signed to Spinefarm Records. The band have stated that they will not replace Lim, but will also not break up. “The musical creation will continue, and move forward with Taiwan,” they conclude.
