Away Days are doing pop-rock properly

Blitz Kids were arguably a bit like Marmite, dividing audiences and fans of pop-rock firmly down the middle. Having since disbanded, the new outfit to form from their ashes – featuring three members of the defunct troupe – have achieved a pretty solid launch with their debut track, ‘Messiah’. Away Days, fronted by Jono Yates, will (and have) encouraged comparisons to the likes of Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio, both of which are, to an extent, fitting accolades.

The opening moments of ‘Messiah’ hint at a more complex pop-rock vibe, moving away from the cliched commercialism of many of their contemporaries. With a huge pop hook rearing its head in the huge chorus, those who have written off British pop-rock as radio friendly, edge-less fodder, may find some reassurance in Away Days.
