Sometimes the best bands are the ones that you never knew existed. This is exactly how I felt when I happened upon ‘Make It Right’ by The Coathangers recently. I thought this was the best new band I had I heard in a long time, so you can imagine my shock when I discovered that these Atlanta hell raisers had been around for 10 years.
They are the perfect blend of power-pop and punk rock, but don’t mistake The Coathangers for a pop-punk band. Their forthcoming album ‘Nosebleed Weekend’ hits like fist to the face, and sounds how I imagine a jam session between Sleater Kinney and The Murder City Devils would end up. After going back and investigating their back catalogue, these ladies seem more charismatic and confident than ever on their new material.
Its certainly won them a few highly-regarded fans, too. The have had the seal of approval from the queen of noise Kim Gordon, and will be joining Refused on their US tour this summer. I may have been late to The Coathangers party, but as the old saying goes, better late than never, right?
