London punks the Exhausts are back with the release of their debut album “Leave The Suburbs!” out later this month on Everything Sucks Music. We have a stream of the whole thing for you today!
Tommy Simpson from the band says on the album; “We wrote these songs over a two year period, which is almost as long as we’ve been a band. If we’d have recorded Eric Cantona a few weeks later it could have easily featured one or two of the earlier songs, whilst a few of the others were still being finalised in the weeks leading up to recording.
We realised when attempting to work out a preliminary track listing that one element that remained consistent through almost all ten of songs is the theme of attempting to put distance between yourself and your problems, looking for solutions outside of your immediate environment and this is where the Leave The Suburbs as a title came from”
Listen to it below:
The album was recorded with Phil Booth at JT Soar. Tommy talked us through the experience of it all:
“Whilst on tour in early 2015 we played at a really rad DIY space in Nottingham called JT Soar and got talking to Phil about the album and how we didn’t think making it in a studio was right for us, (originally made plans for recording it ourselves in the downstairs bathroom of the house I was living in at the time), but he assured us that recording properly didn’t have to mean over production so we decided to work with him. He instantly understood the kind of record we wanted to make and he’s such a lovely guy we thought it’d be worth it just to hang out with him for a few days. Having an excuse to hang out in cool places was one of the main reasons we started a band after all.”
We made the album over two days in July 2015 and it was a lot of fun, even if they were two of the most mentally and physically exhausting days of my life. Phil is a total pro and made us feel comfortable whilst constantly pushing us to play the songs as well as we possibly could. We left with an album that we’re proud of and a reaffirmed belief that a band can sound huge without a truly excessive number of overdubs on every track. We were initially worried that doing an album was a little bit self indulgent but the whole thing clocks in at under 22 minutes long which is a nice compromise I think.”
“We’ve got a month long tour of the UK and mainland Europe (watch out Belgium) booked to coincide with the release of the album and we’re really excited to see if people like the songs.”
