Video premiere of Brightr’s ‘Sick Note’

By Mark Johnson

We’re very excited to bring you the video premiere of ‘Sick Note’ by Brightr, ahead of his upcoming tour in Ireland.

“The video for “Sick Note” is silly and bloody, with occasional sick, but I was also trying to convey an idea through it that no matter what knocks you down (the mocked up injuries and fake bloody scenes), those sad times are only as powerful as you allow them to be and the awesome stuff (family, friends etc) is gonna be there to pull you back up. I pieced this video together with footage from two of my favourite tours with my best friends Marty (Annas Anchor) and Tomasso (Girless), as well as footage from my time away in America to play at The Fest and have a holiday with my family. The bloody injury prone scenes were where it all got a bit silly, but what can I say, I’m a sucker for fake blood and gross silly antics.”

‘Sick Note’ is taken from the 2016 full-length release ‘Year One’ and Laurie Cottingham, the man behind this acoustic-emo project, has this to say about the track: “I wrote ‘Sick Note’ as a kind of mantra/reminder to myself that if you’re not happy where you are and with what you are doing, then don’t be afraid to change it. Too many people are afraid to make changes, scared to move away from something negative because they don’t want to appear selfish, but being happy isn’t selfish, it’s sane. The vocals of the song end with the lyrics “there’s so much worse than broken bones to me”, as a kind of mantra to the situation I was in at the time; unhappy, frustrated, alone and mentally ‘breaking apart’. Broken bones will heal, but your mental health is so fragile, it doesn’t make sense to let other people break you or to live unhappy. Be you, be awesome, be happy.”
